McKnight Earns Black Belt from the Best

TRADITIONAL TECHNIQUE Instructor Cameron McKnight, second from the right, and his Okinawan Goju-Ryu Karate students, from left, Shane Harris, Ryan Haynes, Daniel Haynes, Damion Mason-Huta and Courtenay Castle. McKnight recently returned from a training camp in Wellibgton where he earned his black belt 1st dan.

Being in the presence of greatness could only inspire Gisborne martial artist Cameron McKnight.

The 32-year-old attended a three-day Goju Ryu Karate training camp in Wellington where he was part of a 120-strong contingent which came under the instruction of Master Morio Higaonna - a 9th Dan black belt and the world chief instructor of the International Okinawan Goju-Ryu Karate-do Federation.

McKnight returned home not only richer from the teachings of the sensei but as a 1st Dan black belt after passing his grading on the final day.

Such is the influence of the master that students from Australia and Japan were among those who took part in the three day training sessions and grading.

Over half of those who attended were black belts.

Each day started with traditional Goju-Ryu Karate warm-ups, then sessions progressed to different aspects of karate training such as perfecting basic techniques, Kata training, Kata applications, and both physical and spirit training.

These sessions were enhanced by Sensei Higaonna's vast knowledge and stories of his experiences.

The final day grading reflected the dedication and perseverance of the students and a highlight was the spirit and skill shown by several of the children.

McKnight has been doing Goju-Ryu for 11 years, starting in Gisborne under Roy Haronga, and progressing to the point where he has been the Gisborne club instructor for the past four to five years.

The cellar hand said he particularly enjoyed the traditional side of it.

"I really enjoy the kata and applicationas of the kata".

Gisborne are a small club but the door to their dojo, at the old scout hall in Carnavon Street, is always open.

They train twice a week, usually Monday and Thursday at 5:30pm although this has changed to Saturdays and Sundays during the grape vintage season.
