Kumite
Ippon Kumite (Points Sparring)
Ippon Kumite is points sparring and three judges will indicate when a point has been scored. The Referee will then stop the fight and award a point or half point. The winner is the first competitor to get to 3 full points or the competitor that has the most points at the end of 2 minutes.
In the case of hikiwake (tie), there is one extension and the first competitor to score will be the winner.
A referee will control the fight and stop the fight when he sees or the judges indicate a point has been scored.
Penalty action or disqualification will occur in all kumite for leaving the ring, excessive contact hitting the face, etc.
Iri Kumi Ju
Iri-kumi ju is continuous sparring and three judges will decide the winner by hantei (Judges raising their flags) at the end of the bout (2 minutes for adult). Referee will control the fight and only stop the fight when he sees the possibility of penalty action (ex: out of the ring, hitting the face, etc).
Winner will be the competitor who receives more than two flags by hantei. In the case of hikiwake (tie), there is one extension bout of 1 minute and winner has to be decided.
Winner will be decided not only by attacking techniques, but also blocking techniques, taisabaki (foot & body movement), fighting spirit and total performance of the fight. Contact is allowed to the body and legs (not joints) in controlled manner (not full contact), but all techniques to the head and face area must be controlled and stopped before hitting (light skin contact to cheek and head will not be penalized).
Grabbing is allowed for three second for breaking balance, or controlling opponent for attack. Purposeless grabbing will be penalized. Take down is allowed with controlled techniques and competitor has three seconds before he or she throws finishing techniques (kime) to the opponent on the ground.
