New students are encouraged to come along and try out a few sessions with no obligation, to see if the club meets their expectations.

The club is one if not the oldest karate club in Upper Hutt and was originally established in the late 60’s or early 70’s.

The Upper Hutt club offers instruction in traditional Okinawan Goju-Ryu Karate, as taught in the International Okinawan Goju Ryu Karate Do Federation (IOGKF) and is a member of the International Okinawa Goju-Ryu Karate Federation New Zealand(IOGKFNZ), which is affiliated to IOGKF.

There are a number of affiliated dojos within Wellington, so if students want to progress more rapidly or just want extra training, they can visit up to four other dojos, all within a half hours drive.

Main Instructor

Sensei Brian McGhie Rokudan (6th Dan)

Began training in 1974 in Upper Hutt. The style taught at the club at the time was Kyokushinkai. In the late 70’s the club affiliated to Sensei Higaonna and we started training in Okinawan Goju. I have traveled to train with Sensei Higaonna on a number of occasions, with one visit to the United States being for a two-month duration.
